I used to get in arguments with my former band mates and management (back in the days when I had band mates and management) about how honest to be at the end of a show. If someone approached me and said, “Wow, that was a great show,” when I didn’t think it was, I would proceed to school them on why that was NOT in fact a good show, much less a great one. I would say thank you, but then describe every mistake; every missed beat; every note I didn’t quite hit; in painstaking detail. I am masterful when describing my faults.

I’ve since decided that the people telling me to cut that out were right, and I’m working on being better about it. We are often hardest on ourselves and can’t always make the most rational judgment on the things we do.

Plus, you don’t want to change anyone’s mind from “that was a pretty cool band” to “wow, I didn’t see it before, but this band really sucks”. That’s just bad business.
