“Ordinary Day”

This is a song about how bizarre everything is.
We are conscious mammals on a gigantic ball of metal, dirt, and water; soaked in oxygen and nitrogen; held fast to an object that is incredibly tiny compared to the gigantic ball of plasma it’s circling; which in itself is incredibly small compared to the vastness of the galaxy it’s a part of; which pales in comparison to the entirety of the universe; which most of us can’t even fathom.
We are conscious mammals unable to detect the vastness of everything around us; the untold numbers of organisms swirling around you when you walk out your door.
In the backyard is a creature you’ve never seen. It’s searching for food, or someone like itself to make more of itself with; it’s trying not to be eaten or stepped on, and it doesn’t care about you, to the extent that you are something it wishes to avoid.
We are conscious mammals sharing space with other conscious mammals. There are millions upon millions of people who will never hear of you; who at this very second are doing something you will never know about. Sharing intimacies that will forever be lost when they are gone.
And we have to pretty much ignore it or go mad …and to you, it’s just an ordinary day…
